The Cost of One-Size-Fits-All Marketing

The Cost of One-Size-Fits-All Marketing (And Why a Holistic Approach Matters More Than Ever)

We live in an age where positivity is prized. Where everything needs to be framed as uplifting, encouraging, and optimistic. And for the most part, I agree with that.

But there’s a difference between being positive… and being honest.

Lately, I’ve felt increasingly unsettled by what I’m hearing from business owners. This is direct feedback from people who come to me for guidance.

They tell me how aggressive it feels out there. How pushy. How narrow the advice has become.

They describe “marketers” who position their single offering as the solution regardless of the business, the stage, or the context.

And when you take a closer look? That offering is often extremely limited.

One channel. One tactic. One framework >>> sold to everyone.

That doesn’t sit well with me.

Marketing is not one-size-fits-all.

Small business owners and solopreneurs don’t have the luxury of trial-and-error at scale.

They can’t afford to pour thousands of dollars into strategies that fall apart because they were never designed for their business in the first place.

Yet too often, that’s exactly what’s happening.

Marketing is being sold as a shortcut, not a system.

A tactic, not a strategy.

A quick fix, not a thoughtful process.

What I Hear From Prospects (Over and Over Again)

Almost every meaningful conversation I have starts the same way:

“You approach this differently.” “No one’s explained it like this before.” “You actually understand my position.” “You’re not just trying to sell me something.”

And I want to be very clear about something: That’s not because I’m some great salesperson. It’s because I give people space.

Space to think. Space to reflect. Space to consider what actually makes sense for them.

Not every prospect becomes a client. The work only works when there’s mutual fit.

But when I do have a deep, thoughtful conversation with someone who fits my ideal client profile, we often end up working together because they feel seen, respected, and understood.

That trust isn’t manufactured. It’s built.

A Clear Look Back

There’s something else I believe is important to say.

Some years ago, I worked with a client who never saw additional business from the work we did together. And that experience has stayed with me – not as regret, but as something I continue to examine.

I look back at that engagement and study what wasn’t aligned… the strategy, the timing, the readiness, the systems?

Why? Because outcomes matter.

Good intentions aren’t enough. Effort alone isn’t enough. Ideas without alignment don’t create results. That mindset has shaped how I work ever since.

I stay committed to learning – constantly. Studying markets. Buyer behavior. Brand strategy. Systems. Emerging platforms. And the foundational methods that still work.

Because the world isn’t narrowing, it’s expanding. And if we want to serve businesses well, our understanding has to expand with it.

Why I Believe So Strongly in Holistic Marketing

Holistic marketing isn’t about doing everything.

It’s about understanding everything that’s available, and then choosing what’s appropriate, intentionally.

It looks at:

  • The business model
  • The customer journey
  • The brand foundation
  • The systems behind the scenes
  • The right mix of channels – digital, physical, relational
  • The stage of the business
  • The human beings involved

It resists shortcuts. It values alignment. And it starts with an attitude of service.

Service to the business owner. Service to the customer. Service to the long-term health of the brand.

A Word to My Fellow Marketers

This part matters to me.

If we work in marketing, I believe we owe it to business owners to broaden our understanding.

To educate ourselves beyond a single platform or tactic. To resist the urge to oversimplify for the sake of selling. To stop positioning ourselves as the only answer.

Because the stakes are real. These businesses are livelihoods. They’re passion projects. They’re the reason people left corporate roles to build something meaningful.

They deserve guidance rooted in care, competence, and context.

Where I’m Standing Today

As I step further into this new year, I’m crystal clear on how I want to work.

I’m engaged with a wide range of businesses and organizations – across industries, stages, and challenges. The work is demanding, complex, and meaningful.

Not because there’s a single formula for success but because doing the right work, in the right way, matters. That means listening carefully. Thinking holistically. And approaching every engagement with service at the center.

Because when marketing is built on clarity, alignment, and intention, it does more than support growth. It creates businesses that produce real results, not just activity.

If this resonated, grab a spot on my calendar. Let’s talk through what’s aligned, what’s not, and what actually needs to change in your brand, your strategy, and how you’re showing up in the market.
